The Levin

'Peaceful, comfortable and quiet', this tall terraced town house is the baby sister of David Levin's 'more opulent' Capital next door (see previous entry). 'There is less show, and a stronger domestic sense here,' says a Guide inspector this year. It is managed by Harald Duttine; the young staff are 'courteous, friendly'. Guests are welcomed in a small pistachio-coloured lobby; a 'spectacular' 18-metre-long light installation cascades down the stairwell of the spiral staircase leading to the bedrooms. An east-facing room had 'an urban prospect of town house rooflines; tasteful, minimalist furniture; a very comfortable bed; good lighting; and 30 Penguin classics to choose from'. A champagne minibar stocks only the ingredients needed for guests to mix cocktails. In the 'compact' Le Metro bar and bistro, chef Marcin Kosinski serves a grazing menu of small plates (crispy squid, garlic aïoli; cumin kofte, minted yogurt dip) with larger classics (burgers; haddock and chips). There is a 'varied' breakfast buffet - 'freshly squeezed red grapefruit juice, good yogurt, conserves in white china pots' and 'excellent scrambled eggs served on a well-heated plate'.
  • Excellent. Every bit as good as on our first vist four years ago. Immaculate is the word that comes to mind here: everything is just about perfect. The staff are superb; friendly, helpful, interested and interesting. They remembered previous conversations and picked them up later. Our standard room was not large but was very well appointed and had very good lighting, we could actually read! The bed was comfortable, and the bathroom was excellent. Lunch and breakfast in the Metro in the basement were good, we especially liked the croissants and pastries which turned out be come from the owner's bakery!Mr Levin sets high standards.

  • Expensive but it offers peace and comfort. An ideal base for shopping. Friendly reception. Courteous manager. Bedroom with reasonable but not perfect sound proofing, effective air conditioning, tasteful minimalist furniture. Breakfast in slightly cramped Metro had prompt service, a varied buffet table, but insipid coffee.
