The Zetter - London

'A gently laid-back place with interesting quirky touches', this Victorian warehouse in trendy Clerkenwell was converted into a contemporary hotel by restaurateurs Mark Sainsbury and Michael Benyan. Inspectors in 2011 were 'very taken by the original use of design and colour, and the cheerful welcome from the staff'. The bedrooms vary considerably in size. A 'spacious' corner room facing Clerkenwell Road (shutters and secondary glazing on the four sash windows to minimise noise) was 'colourful: dark pink walls, pale olive wooden fittings; a citrus-yellow rug on the white linen of the large bed; we slept well. The smart bathroom had a powerful shower.' Basic rooms are compact. The crescent-shaped restaurant, Bistrot Bruno Loubet, overlooks St John's Square. 'The menu is imaginative without being pretentious; highlights were artichoke terrine; snails; cod with spices and herbs; a wonderful chocolate dish.' Breakfast (charged extra) was also enjoyed in the restaurant. 'Crunchy home-made granola; large loaves of fresh bread; excellent pastries and preserves. An interesting range of cooked dishes.' The sister Zetter Townhouse, '21 steps across the square', opened in 2011 (see next entry).
