Mount Haven Hotel & Restaurant

'A great base for exploring Cornwall', Mike and Orange Trevillion's hotel is in a village overlooking St Michael's Mount. It has a contemporary decor with oriental overtones. Incense burns in the lobby; there are tapestries from Jaipur, caskets from Bhutan, figurines from Nepal in the public areas. 'A good stay' was enjoyed this year. The dining room is furnished in dark reds with leather and velvet upholstery; a seating area by glass doors leading on to a terrace (with tables and chairs for alfresco meals) has the views. One visitor thought his room 'characterless'; others liked the 'cosiness on a chill evening'. The chef, James Morris, describes his cooking style as 'modern British with a twist'. Typical dishes: Cornish venison, caramelised chicory, red wine pear; loin of pork, beetroot Tatin, pork belly. Many of the bedrooms face the sea; 14 have a private garden terrace or balcony with the topfloor ones enjoying panoramic views of Mounts Bay and St Michael's Mount. . 'Ours was nicely furnished, really comfortable.' Breakfast has a buffet with organic fruit, natural yogurts; cooked options include kedgeree, omelette Arnold Bennett, French toast with crispy bacon and watercress. (SH, and others)

  • Our second visit, and Mount Haven did not disappoint! A warm welcome greeted us, followed by a lovely room with a comfy bed, small balcony, and well-appointed bathroom. The entire hotel was spotlessly clean, and the staff were eager to please. The owners were just as we remembered, slightly on the eccentric side but truly outstanding hosts. The restaurant experience was memorable - possibly the freshest, most besutifully cooked piece of fish I have had for a long time. If you are looking for a "traditional hotel" this is not the place for you. But if you want to stay in a hotel that doesn't feel like a hotel, with the warmth and comfort you would expect from staying with good friends you will love it!
