The Arch London

Within sight of Marble Arch, this stylish modern hotel (Pride of Britain) 'has an intimate feel for its size', say Guide inspectors in 2012, who found 'much to like'. A conversion of seven Georgian town houses and two mews homes, it is owned by Abraham Bejerano; Grant Powell is now the manager. 'The staff were unfailingly helpful, ordering taxis, looking up information on the Internet for us.' The public areas are decorated with striking artwork and installations by emerging young British artists. The bedrooms have eye-catching colours: 'Our standard room was small but comprehensively equipped: good storage, well-thought-through details (a light in the wardrobe, proper coat-hangers, good lighting by the bed for those who want to read); a Nespresso machine, fresh milk and complimentary soft drinks. It overlooked a mews and was peaceful at night.' Francesco Zanchetta, the chef in the informal HUNter 486 brasserie, has introduced a new menu (dishes like oven-baked duck egg, cumin-scented brown shrimp; Suffolk chicken casserole). Breakfast is 'delicious', with 'especially good home-made muesli', a bowl of fresh-cut fruit; 'eggs on chunky sourdough toast'.
  • A conversion of seven elegant town houses. The warm welcome included greetings from the general manager. The public rooms were attractive, shiny, done with humour: quirky sculptures and works of art. Background music (groan) in most rooms, but the beautifully furnished, well-stocked library seemed to have escaped this intrusion. In our third-floor junior suite, the decor was eclectic and confusing, but it had three plain walls with some well-chosen art work, and plain, atractive curtains. It was was light, airy, slightly narrow. Four windows overlooking the street meant there was a little traffic noise. Our bed was comfortable. The large bathroom was well stocked with fluffy bath sheets and robes. Lighting was good, storage carefully thought out. A televison at the foot of the bath had a handset guaranteed to be submersible. Many high-tech things impressed my husband. I was more impressed by the inclusive soft drinks mini-bar, the Nespresso machine, the teapot, the milk in the fridge. Breakfast was exceedingly good. Staff were obliging and professional throughout.
