The Old Rectory

Built as the rectory of the 11th-century church in an 'idyllic' hamlet in the Exmoor national park, this part-Georgian, part-Victorian house is run as a small hotel by owners Huw Rees and Sam Prosser. 'They are visible, friendly and calmly efficient,' said readers. Inspectors agreed: 'The amiable hosts have created an informal "house in the country" atmosphere; major improvements have been carried out; everything is new bar a few antiques.' Guests are asked to place their dinner order over drinks in a 'cosy' lounge or a conservatory. Huw Rees, the cook, uses local produce (vegetables from the garden) for his short menus. 'Good home cooking; I asked for the recipe of the delicious red pepper and tomato soup; we enjoyed Exmoor pork and sea bass; a copious dish of vegetables. Sadly, background music played.' There is 'no clutter' in the bedrooms: 'Our garden-facing room had a sofa and a large footstool, good hanging and storage space; a well-appointed bathroom.' There is direct access to the Coastal Path from the large 'well-maintained' garden. (Tony and Ginny Ayers, and others)
  • The beauty all around is enhanced by a house and garden with an allure all of their own. Huw and Sam's taste in decor is confident and precise. the effect is restful without being soporific. The bedroom was good to spend time in, as are the two public rooms. But the most attractive aspect of the stay is the attention paid by the hosts.

  • Peaceful, informal country house style. Idyllic location. Many recent improvements. Cheerful welcome. careful hosts. Sober decor of public rooms. Good home cooking but intrusive muzak at dinner. Good breakfast, fully served. Uncluttered bedroom with good bathroom.

  • A well-run, welcoming haven. Our room at the top was huge and comfortable, with a good bathroom. From one window it faced the church, from the other the sea. The owners are visible, friendly and calmly efficient. The menu changes every night; cooking and presentation are simple, focusing on the ingredients. Plenty of sitting spaces (two lougnes and a large conservatory), and for once the piped music was accepetable.
