Swinton Park

César award in 2011

'Elegant, even luxurious, but never stuffy', Mark and Felicity Cunliffe-Lister's mock-Gothic castle in the Yorkshire Dales is 'impressive'. It stands in 200 acres of 'truly beautiful grounds' with a lake and a deer park. Tom Lewis is the manager. There are countless activities in the grounds for adults and children (all ages are welcomed). Visitors trapped indoors by bad weather 'relaxed reading newspapers and magazines in the elegant public rooms'. There's a spa and fitness centre and a snooker room; a cookery school. The bedrooms and suites are on the first and second floors (a lift is available). 'We were surprised by the size of our room and the general level of comfort; we had everything we could ever need,' is one comment. Another reader was impressed with his king-size bed, 'suitable for a ménage à trois'. In the dining room ('tables properly laid, our meal was unhurried and perfectly served'), chef Simon Crannage has a modern style, with dishes like middle white pork, crispy herb buckwheat, treacle roasted carrot. (Ken and Mildred Edwards, WK Wood, and others)
  • An enjoyable stay. We were surprised by the size of our room and general comfort of the hotel. Plenty of room in the lounges for tea and biscuits. We enjoyed a couple of hours with the falconer.

  • Cheerful, efficient welcome. We were upgraded to a lovely, large room. From its panoramic windows we watched a cricket match: a nostalgic feel of old England. Super-comfortable bed. First-class housekeeping. Everything you could need. Dinner very good, but the menu didn't change, and there were some linguistic dificulties. Thoroughly deserves its place in the Guide.

    Ken & Mildred Edwards, 03/09/2012

  • I first visited five years ago and since then we have been coming two or three times a year. Every visit exceeds the previous one - so much so my fiance and I are getting married there next year. It feels like visiting the home of friends. The staff are welcoming. The food is exquisite. And Swinton welcomes children of all ages.

    Lyn Marsay, 10/10/2011

  • The chef is a pure genius; the food was absolutely exquisite. Simply fantastic. An unforgettable time, and something that will stay with us for years to come.
