Bedruthan Steps Hotel

César award in 2012

Above a golden sandy beach on a 'beautiful stretch' of the north Cornish coast, this large white hotel has welcomed families for over 40 years. It is owned and managed by sisters Emma Stratton, Deborah Wakefield and Rebecca Whittington. 'They know exactly what families need, and they have the space to provide it,' says a reporter this year. There are indoor and outdoor swimming pools; 'a wonderful array of entertainment'; playgrounds, a jungle gym for children; tennis courts; a 'real' spa for adults. The exterior of the building, much extended, shows its 1960s origins; inside all is 'delightful'. Major changes in the dining arrangements were introduced in 2012. The Wild Café, open from 8 am until late evening, replaces the family restaurant: it will provide meals for all ages; high tea is served here with child-friendly main courses cooked to order (parents have a complimentary hot drink and cookie). The new Herring restaurant has set menus specialising in seafood. The bedrooms have a 'fresh seaside decor, enough hanging space for a proper holiday'. The Scarlet (see next entry) is a child-free sister hotel.

  • This was the second time I have stayed at this hotel. The first time was with my husband and the dog, this time was on my own. I cannot praise the staff enough. I never once felt odd. The hotel looks a bit grim from the outside, but inside it is spacious with comfortable rooms and magnificent views. The food was very good. The spa is calm relaxing. I will be back!

  • A wonderful hotel in every way - spotlessly clean rooms, fantastic food, caring and attentive staff and excellent facilities, especially for families. You feel as relaxed as you do in your own home while receiving first-class food and service.

  • This was our second visit to the hotel. Once again we enjoyed our stay very much. The rooms were great and the staff very helpful. it was lovely to relax in the adults lounge infront of a warm fire. The atmosphere in the Herring restaurant was good and the food excellent.

  • We stayed for one night. We had heard of it being a family hotel, but we had a lovely adult experience. They managed to keep contact with children to a minimum. In the restaurant we were seated separately, and the spa was adult only. Both lunch and breakfast were excellent. The views of the beach are stunning and despite a dated exterior inside was very well presented and easy on the eye, with some great art. The staff were all helpful, and gave the feeling they wanted you to have a good time.

  • Our second visit with our extended family of 13, aged from 74 to eight months. It caters perfectly for all our needs. New dining arrangements, of an allowance per day, sounded complicated, but seemed to work. The two restaurants are new and different in style: the Herring emphasiing fish and more sophisticated dining , and the The Wild café with board menu and more relaxed atmosphere. Both serve excellent food. The breakfasts are fantastic.
