Sysonby Knoll Hotel  (Shortlist*)

Built in 1911, this red brick Edwardian six-bedroom home has been developed and extended into a hotel and restaurant. It has been in the same family since 1965; the current owners are Jenny and Gavin Howling, who have two young children. The River Eye runs alongside; guests can fish free of charge. Individually designed rooms, some with four-poster beds. 'Very attractive' landscaped garden, three acres of meadow, and beehives which supply the hotel's honey. The restaurant has fine views, and English/European-style menus prepared by chef Susan Meakin. Lounge, bar, Wi-Fi. Children and dogs welcomed (resident dog). 30 bedrooms (some on ground floor; some in neighbouring annexe; ramp). B&B £47.50--£103 per person; D,B&B £60.50--£119.50. Dinner £22.50--£38

  • Like stepping back in time to 1979. We stayed in a four-poster room, one of the most expensive. Its decor is outmoded, and the walls had many cracks, etc, and ancient fixtures and fittings. The view was over the car park. The bathroom was not great. The dining room has good views, but again the furniture and decor were ordinary, so was the dinner. Breakfast was ok. The staff were very friendly and helpful, despite the owners being away on holiday.

  • A professionally-run but friendly, family-owned hotel. We stayed in one of the spacious,well-equipped four-poster rooms overlooking the quiet garden and river (where guest may enjoy complimentary fishing). Light sleepers might prefer to avoid those courtyard rooms that face the road, though the view over the cavalry horses enjoying their summer break in the RVC HQ would be a bonus. (Was the mounting block thoughtfully provided to get into the four-poster bed inspired by the location?) The hotel also sells its own excellent honey. Metropolitan sophisticates looking for fashionable eating might be initially disappointed by the seemingly unambitious menu, but the quality, execution and presentation of what appears is first-rate. This hotel knows its clients and its business, and delivers in a friendly and flexible way. So it is PG tips and instant coffee on the in-room tray and toast for breakfast!
