Hotel Endsleigh

'Magical, tranquil, unhurried, superb.' A succinct summary this year of Olga Polizzi's luxurious country house hotel in 'a lovely setting' on the edge of Dartmoor. The early 19th-century house, built as a shooting and fishing lodge for the Duke and Duchess of Bedford, stands in gardens (designed by Humphry Repton), which run down to the River Tamar. Helen Costello is its manager. It has been restored in the spirit of the Regency period: modern country house furnishings and contemporary art alongside original panelling and Victorian artefacts. Bedrooms have antiques, original features and modern bathroom (but 'no shaving mirror'). In the candlelit dining room, chef Christopher Dyke serves a short menu of 'creative' modern dishes, perhaps ham hock, new potato and baby leek terrine, pickled cauliflower; loin of Brentor lamb, pommes dauphine, pea purée, sweetbreads, ginger French beans. Breakfast, served at table, has organic porridge; smoked salmon and eggs Benedict. The Endsleigh has seven rods on an eight-mile stretch of the Tamar. Olga Polizzi also owns Tresanton, St Mawes (see entry). (P Torr, and others)
  • High quality of peace and comfort. Lovely from the moment you arrive. Fantastic staff, always at hand. Atmosphere of attention and car. Beautiful gardens tumbling down to the river.

  • I booked the entire hotel for a semi-annual event: we stayat boutique luxury hotels around the world, and we have high standards! From our welcome to our departure, the service was excellent. Staff and management were friendly and efficient. The food is very, very good. Local produce, well prepared and matched. Menu thoughtfully creative without being pretentious. Breakfast is also very good (lovely sausages). Afternoon tea is a treat, particularly the Victoria sponge. A visual and cullinary treat.
