The Redesdale Arms

Value offers
At his centuries-old coaching inn on the main street of a Cotswold town, Robert Smith is a 'hands-on' owner/manager, whose welcome is 'warm'. The 'terrific service from the staff' is also praised. The bars and restaurant have old passages, original oak beams; leather seating and an open fire in the residents' lounge. The best bedrooms are in a converted stable block at the back, a short walk outdoors (umbrellas are provided). These rooms have a contemporary feel: 'Ours was very comfortable, with close attention to detail throughout, especially the lighting.' A visitor in a wheelchair found a ground-floor room 'easily accessible'. Rooms in the main building have a more traditional style; those at the front are double glazed. The chef, Daniel Ciobotiaru, cooks in the modern British style; his 'excellent' dinner menu has dishes like River Exe mussels, white wine, Cotswold cream and garlic; slow-braised sirloin of beef, creamed horseradish mash, roasted root vegetables. Meals may be taken on the garden terrace in fine weather. There's a wide choice at breakfast, 'to suit every taste'. (JF, and others)
