Co-owner and manager Robert Smith 'is hands-on and genial', says a visitor this year to this traditional Cotswold inn on the market town's main street. 'The staff are pleasant and attentive.' Another comment: 'We cannot praise highly enough; the rooms are clean, comfortable and affordable.' Seven bedrooms are in the main building (those at the front have double glazing). Eleven more bedrooms have been completed in a converted stable block at the back (a short walk outdoors, umbrellas available). They have oak and granite furnishings; modern bathroom, some with a whirlpool bath. The residents' lounge has dark wood, leather seating, an open fire in a stone surround. There are original beams, old passages in the bars; the restaurant has been renovated this year. Loredan Gargalac is now the chef. His modern menu might include tiger prawns, lemongrass and chilli broth; roast loin of locally reared pork. 'Dinners were of good quality and quantity.' A visitor who was disappointed with breakfast was promised that his points would be addressed. (JCS Frood, Keith and Sue Ward, and others)
