The Redesdale Arms

Value offers
On the main street of this pretty Cotswold market town, this 17th-century inn, with its honey-coloured Georgian facade, is run by Robert Smith, the co-owner and manager. 'His welcome is warm and he has a hands-on style,' says a visitor in 2013. 'The service is terrific.' There are original beams, old passages in the bars, and a lounge with leather seating and an open fire. The new chef, Daniel Ciobotiaru, has brought 'young, exciting ideas' (says Robert Smith) to his modern menus. 'Excellent' dishes might include sautéed mushrooms, creamy garlic sauce, melted Gruyère cheese; trio of Old Spot sausages, herb- and bacon-mashed potato. Bedrooms in the main building are traditionally styled; those at the front have double glazing. Rooms in a converted stable block off the courtyard at the back and in the recently completed mews have contemporary furnishings. 'Close attention to detail is shown, especially in the lighting.' 'Our Mews room was comfortable and spacious.' The 'little extra touches' - good toiletries, a decanter of sherry, umbrella - are appreciated. Breakfast is a 'generous' buffet. 'A typical town hotel; busy with lots of people chatting in the bar and eating in the dining room.' (John Frood, and others)
