Roundwood House

César award in 1990

In pastures and woods in the rural Irish Midlands, this 'welcoming' Palladian villa was saved from ruin by the Irish Georgian Society. Since 1983, it has been owned by the Kennan family who receive guests in relaxed style. Hannah Kennan and her husband, Paddy Flynn, are in charge: they live in the house with their young family; her parents, Rosemarie and Frank, have moved to a house in the grounds. A recent visitor questioned whether 'slightly shabby charm' might have given way to 'plain shabby'. The Guide sent an inspector in 2011 who reports: 'The house has a lived-in feel; you can feel the history around you. The stair carpet might be threadbare, and paintwork chipped, but everything is spotlessly clean.' A drawing room 'feels intimate despite its size; sofas and chairs are grouped; books are everywhere'. Paddy Flynn cooks a no-choice dinner: 'The food was simple, not fussy; he produced interesting vegetarian dishes; a perfect carrot and mushroom loaf served with his speciality, delicious potato and garlic potatoes. My partner is still talking about the home-made ice cream.'
