Roundwood House

César award in 1990

'This is a house and a home, not an immaculate hotel. You can feel the history all around you.' Guests are received in relaxed style at Paddy and Hannah Flynn's Palladian villa, which has been a restoration project for her family for more than 30 years. It has a 'lived-in feel' but 'everything is spotlessly clean', says a trusted reporter. 'He moved his mower so we could sit at a wrought iron table on his freshly cut lawn; she brought us glasses of wine as we chatted about the flowers and plants.' The main hall has creaking floorboards, an eclectic collection of books, furniture and ornaments. The drawing room feels intimate despite its size, thanks to small groupings of sofas and chairs. Bedrooms in the house are spacious, and have many original features; deep colours on the walls. Smaller rooms in the Yellow House face a walled garden. Guests eat communally in the dining room, where Paddy Flynn serves an 'excellent' five-course no-choice dinner five nights a week (a shorter supper on other evenings). Don't miss the home-made ice cream. (JB)
  • Last Friday we went to Roundwood House again. They were doing a Halloween evening, most unusual and entertaining: a buffet dinner, a play, ghost stories, dozens of candles. Our room had been repainted since our last stay and its bathroom upgraded. The orange juice at breakfast was most definitely freshly squeezed! Hannah makes her own soda bread: Paddy's mushrooms with blue cheese were served on lovely toast.
