The Dower House

César award in 2008

In a lovely wooded garden bordered by the rivers Beauly and Conon, this Georgian single-storey cottage-orné (built as a shooting lodge) is run as a guest house by Robyn and Mena Aitchison. It has long been liked by readers, who enjoy the 'home from home' atmosphere. The Aitchisons have given the house a 'much-loved feel', filling it with antiques, Persian rugs, Chinese vases; it has chintzy wallpaper, flowery fabrics. A rare dissenter this year complained of 'clutter'. Some bedrooms are small, but all have a large bed and a well-equipped bathroom. A suite has Edwardian fittings and a Victorian bath ('long and narrow'). Mr Aitchison describes his food as 'gutsy, modern British'. His no-choice menu (discussed in advance) might include beetroot risotto; darn of halibut, Black Isle chanterelles. Breakfasts are generous: fresh fruit salad, heather honey, home-laid eggs. There is a self-service 'malt cupboard' in the bar; the whisky trail, fishing and walking are all nearby. Children are welcomed: the garden has swings and a tree house. (SC, JSW, and others)
  • Mr Aitchison is indeed an excellenet cook, and his wife is charming.
