Mornington House

'We thoroughly enjoyed our stay; the host served the best dinner we had during our entire visit to Ireland,' say American visitors this year to Warwick and Ann O'Hara's 'intimate' country house. 'Ann is a great cook and Warwick is a gracious host.' His family have lived here since 1858: 'We enjoyed our conversations with him and were impressed with his knowledge of the property.' The house, in extensive grounds (with 'spectacular walled gardens'), is reached by a long winding driveway. A Guide inspector was warmly welcomed. 'The elegant drawing room has good antiques, lots of light from large windows, and an interesting mix of paintings.' The bedrooms, which vary in size, have good linens, and fluffy towels in the bathroom. Meals are served communally in the dining room: Mrs O'Hara's country house dishes, locally sourced (fruit and vegetables from the gardens), might include Guinness stew. Breakfast has freshly squeezed juice, yogurt, muesli, home-made nut bread and 'the most perfectly cooked rhubarb I've ever tasted'; hot food is cooked to order by Mr O'Hara. • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Spacious and comfortable room. Big bathroom, well laid out. The best dinner we had during our entire stay in Ireland. Ann is a great cook and Warrick is a gracious and enjoyable host. We were impressed with his knowledge of the history of his property and of Ireland. The walled gardens were spectacular
