The exterior of this 18th-century coaching inn might be 'rather sombre', but 'the welcome is warm and the cooking is excellent'. Praise from a trusted reporter this year for this restaurant-with-rooms run by French chef Fabrice Bouteloup and his wife, Alison, in a conservation village. 'Recommended for anyone who enjoys really good food,' is another comment. In the candlelit restaurant, popular with locals, The host cooks modern French dishes 'with a twist'. 'He is a wonderful chef who uses almost entirely local ingredients. There is nothing nouvelle about the portion sizes; rare roast beef, thinly carved, melted in the mouth.' Service by mainly local staff and a 'communicative' manager was 'prompt'. A 'warm, domestic' guest lounge has sofas, and doubles as an overflow dining room. The bedrooms are decorated in 'classic contemporary' style. 'Our corner room had windows on two sides and was light and airy; it had a large sofa and plenty of storage; the bathroom was fine but lacked goodies.' Breakfast has freshly baked croissants, pains au chocolat and 'delicious' porridge. Children are welcomed. (Robert Gower, Sara Price)
  • Despite being on the corner of the main road our lovely, huge room and bathroom were very quiet on a Saturday night. The restaurant was quite buzzy, but with very good service and a bistro atmosphere.

  • Room 1, the largest, was excellent. Sunday roast beef among the best we have had. Comfort and service all excellent

  • Warm and helpful welcome. Comfotrtable room. Excellent food.

    Sir John B. Hall, 05/08/2012

  • Fabrice Bouteloupe is a wonderful chef. There is nothing 'nouvelle' about the food portions. A decent, not over-priced wine list. The dining room staff were all very friendly and efficient. Our room was huge, very comfortable, with a good bathroom (no goodies). Double glazing kepet it very quiet. The old coaching inn is tastefully decorated and has beene turned with imagination into a lovely hotel. Breakfast was excellent
