Ees Wyke

Once the Lake District retreat of Beatrix Potter, this fine Georgian building stands in pretty gardens above Esthwaite Water. It is run as a small country hotel by chef/proprietor Richard Lee and his wife, Margaret. The two residents' lounges have a 'cosy English decor', with comfortable chairs and sofas, open fires in winter. From here, and from the bedrooms, there are 'stunning' views across the lake towards some of the best-known fells. Two of the eight bedrooms have a private bathroom across a landing (dressing gown provided). Guests are invited to make their dinner choices at 6.30 pm from a daily-changing five-course menu. The meal, served at 7.30 in the light restaurant, might include duck foie gras with spinach; noisettes of local lamb, rosemary and Dijon mustard topping, red wine sauce. 'Prepared with imagination, well presented,' is a recent comment. Breakfast has an extensive buffet of cereals; freshly squeezed orange juice; cooked dishes include Loch Fyne kipper. Ees Wyke is on the market. Mr Lee tells us that he does not expect a sale before the end of the 2012 season.
