Ees Wyke Country House

'Very enjoyable and comfortable, with a roaring log fire in the lounge,' say visitors to Richard and Margaret Lee's small country hotel in Beatrix Potter country. The writer rented the Georgian house as a holiday home, later purchasing nearby Hill Top, where she wrote the Peter Rabbit books. Mr Lee's 'excellent' cooking has long been recommended by Guide readers: his five-course daily-changing menu of modern English/French dishes might include seared scallops; duckling breast, red onion and juniper marmalade. Guests gather in the two traditionally furnished lounges at 6.30 pm to place their order for a meal served at 7.30 in the dining room with its views over the 'beautiful' grounds above Esthwaite Water. All the simple bedrooms have the views: two have a private bathroom across a landing (dressing gown provided). Breakfast has home-baked bread, freshly squeezed orange juice, and a generous buffet of cereals and fruit. Cumberland sausages and bacon from an award-winning local butcher are among the cooked dishes. (Mrs E Talbot)
