Chewton Glen

'Absolutely delightful: first-class, attentive service.' Praise in 2012 for this privately owned, luxurious country house hotel (Relais & Châteaux) in extensive grounds on the edge of the New Forest. Another comment: 'The attention to detail, courteous staff and calm atmosphere make this an absolute treat.' The manager, Andrew Stembridge, has overseen significant changes. Children are now actively welcomed (family rooms, a Kids Club, swings in the trees, and special meals). The restaurant has been relaunched as Vetiver with a contemporary decor and a conservatory extension. Andrew Dubourg has joined as head chef, working alongside Luke Matthews. They use fruit, herbs and vegetables from a newly built walled kitchen garden. 'Our scallop starter and fillet steak main course were memorable.' Six two-bedroom tree house suites on stilts in the woodland opened as the Guide went to press. Bedrooms in the main house, have antiques, modern fabrics; most have a terrace, balcony or private garden. Mr Stembridge also oversees Cliveden, Taplow (see Shortlist), which is under the same ownership. (Janette Wright, Sue Pepper, and others)

  • Staying in one of the new, innovative Tree Houses is wonderful. We have visited the hotel many times but this was different. A safe, peaceful, private and inviting space. You can relax without a care in the world. As a couple you can play Tarzan and Jane. The view from our bed was trees and greenery. Breakfast arrived through a hatch while we slept. All we needed to do was boil a kettle.

  • First-class and attentive service. The dinner was excellent and so were the two spa treatements I had.

  • Attention to detail, courteous staff and a calm atmosphere make this an absolute treat. Our room was luxurious and immaculate. Dinner in the Vitiver restaurant is first class. The newly decorated dining area is split into several sections, offering a variety of atmospheres, from light airy rooms to the more formal feel of the largest dining room. Each visit has been a pleasure. The staff deserve special mention due to their care and attention regarding my dietary requirements.

  • My wife and I had our golden wedding celebration at Chewton Glen together with family and friends. It was a superb occasion, and the food, wine, and service were fantastic! it would be difficult to find any aspect that was not perfect - even the sun came out!
