Jesmond Dene House

César award: City hotel of the year

'An unexpected pleasure; a country house almost in the city.' 'A very good hotel; outstanding accommodation and attentive service from the young staff.' Praise comes from two sets of trusted reporters in 2012. Owned by Peter Candler, this Arts & Crafts mansion is in a wooded suburb. Scott Davidson is the new manager. The 'generously equipped' bedrooms, which vary in size and view, are decorated in contemporary style. 'Space is well organised; masses of storage; a super bright bathroom; excellent housekeeping.' 'Our ground-floor suite in an annexe had a supremely comfortable double bed, a sitting area with a large sofa, table and chairs; access to the garden.' In the two dining areas, the 'interesting' menus of chef Michael Penaluna have 'some unusual, well-presented' dishes, perhaps Kielder venison carpaccio, pickled plums, beetroot and horseradish cream; monkfish, north country mixed radishes, bread jus. 'A superb meal at a fair price.' At breakfast, a large buffet has freshly squeezed orange juice; fresh fruit salad, 'good bread'; 'excellent scrambled eggs'. • Surpassed our expectations. The setting is unexpected, a country house almost in the city, yet only three stops on the Metro to the centre. Although it caters for business visitors as a city hotel, there is no "corporate” feel about it. Our welcome was first rate and our room was smartly designed and decorated in contemporary style. Comfortable seating, masses of storage, and a bright bathroom - almost as large as the bedroom. There was a large entrance hallway with a desk, computer, and all the business side of things - space was well organised and practical. Housekeeping was excellent. Only niggle: dim lighting. Our dinner was excellent: menus were interesting. Some unusual dishes, prices very reasonable, service very good. Dining room attractive, tables well spaced.Breakfast good too.

  • We liked it a lot. Good reception. Bedroon of reasonable size but with poor lighting apart from bedside and bathroom lights. Meal organisation and service were faultless and the food was good. Excellent breakfasts.

  • An excellent venue for a special family occasion. We booked three deluxe rooms for six adults and a baby. Our Japanese guests were delighted with their main-house room which overlooked the gardens. The two suites in the new building were spacious: one in particular was of an exceptional standard, with stylish decor, sofas and chairs. The bathroom had two washbasins, modish shower as well as bath. Staff were smart, professional and appropriately attentive without being intrusive. Our evening meal was superb.
