Swinside Lodge

'Pastoral sounds' (birds and newborn lambs) 'greet the day' at this small Georgian house, which stands at the foot of Cat Bells, surrounded by Lake District peaks. The owners, Mike and Kath Bilton, have 'the personal touch', says a fan. 'They wanted us to have a great weekend.' The two sitting rooms have fresh flowers, books, local maps; DVDs for viewing in the bedroom are available at the reception desk. The cooking of the long-serving chef, Clive Imber, attracts non-residents to the candlelit dining room. His daily-changing menu of British/French dishes might include seared tuna, prawns, sesame pepper and cucumber salad; loin of venison, leaf spinach, caramelised apple. There are three styles of room. A superior room at the top has 'thrilling' mountain views; smaller rooms are 'well thought-out, pristine'. 'Nice touches' include 'Lake District guides, a sewing kit, tea/coffee tray with home-made biscuits, mineral water'. Beds are turned down in the evening. Breakfast is 'excellent'; options include local ham with poached eggs, smoked salmon with scrambled eggs. The Biltons 'took endless trouble to explain the most rewarding walks in the area'. (JG, and others)
  • Tasty, generous and colourful food with especially friendly and helpful service. An informative, extensive wine list. Our superior room was immaculate, and we enjoyed pastoral sounds, but it was quite small and dark.

  • A wonderful celebratory evening for 12, including a delicious dinner - original, well-balanced, beautifully presented - and yummy breakfast. Very high standard of service.
