Swinside Lodge

At the foot of Cat Bells, five minutes' walk from Derwentwater, Mike and Kath Bilton's small Georgian Lakeland house is much liked for the 'friendly and attentive service'. It is especially popular with walkers: 'Our stay was peaceful and spoiling; they took unending trouble to explain the most rewarding walks,' say visitors this year. Bedrooms come in three sizes. 'Our superior room at the top was immaculate, with thrilling views of Cat Bells; the pastoral sounds of newborn lambs and birdlife started our day.' Evening turn-down is available; all rooms have a hospitality tray, guidebooks, a sewing kit. There are two 'inviting' sitting rooms. In the candlelit dining room, which is open to non-residents, chef Clive Imber serves a set four-course dinner, which changes daily. His British/French dishes might include butternut squash, sage and garlic soup; slow-braised daube of beef, beef fillet, foie gras, pancetta, gratin potato, sage pesto. 'High-quality cooking, beautifully served.' There's an 'informative and extensive' wine list. The 'yummy' breakfast has local bacon and free-range eggs, home-made breads and chutneys. (Sarah Marshall and Peter Hayes)
  • Tasty, generous and colourful food with especially friendly and helpful service. An informative, extensive wine list. Our superior room was immaculate, and we enjoyed pastoral sounds, but it was quite small and dark.

  • A wonderful celebratory evening for 12, including a delicious dinner - original, well-balanced, beautifully presented - and yummy breakfast. Very high standard of service.
