Newport House

Behind deceptively unimposing gates, this Georgian country house hotel has been owned by Kieran Thompson since 1985. It stands on the estuary of the River Newport, for which it owns extensive fishing rights. The long-serving manager is Catherine Flynn: 'She is the heart and soul of the place,' says an inspector in 2012. 'She gives a warm welcome, help with bags, and explains the layout. She is chatty but knows when to leave guests alone.' The public rooms are traditionally decorated; an entrance vestibule leads to two drawing rooms ('high ceilings, comfy seating, bookcases and open fires'). A grand staircase leads to a Regency drawing room, which overlooks the park. Eleven bedrooms are in the main house; five in converted courtyard houses are good for families, anglers and dog owners. 'They are slightly faded; my room, which had three windows, was decorated in muted tones; a wonderfully comfortable bed; a turquoise suite in the bathroom.' The chef, John Gavin, serves 'a meticulously presented five-course meal of traditional dishes (many creamy sauces); fish was cooked to perfection. All the local staff try hard to please.'
