Cnapan

Exceptional value (<£50)
The Cooper family, 'lovely, caring people', have been running this listed Georgian town house in the centre of a small coastal town as a restaurant-with-rooms for 30 years. Judith Cooper is in charge of the kitchen ('I'm a cook, not a chef,' she says); her husband, Michael, and their son, Oliver, are active front-of-house. The public areas of the pink-painted house have a 'lived-in and loved' interior, filled with family treasures and photographs (it is also the Coopers' home). The sitting room has a wood-burning stove; around the house are maps, books, magazines and games. In the restaurant, which has linen cloths on wooden tables and a Welsh dresser, Judith Cooper uses local ingredients for her 'high-quality' meals, with dishes like smoked salmon and crab tart, zesty laver bread, caper mayonnaise; roasted guineafowl breast, red onion, thyme and leek ragout. The pretty bedrooms are light and bright; each has a shower; guests who would prefer a 'relaxing soak' have access to a shared bathroom. All the bedrooms have been renovated with larger en-suites. Breakfasts have home-made muesli and preserves; fresh farm eggs, kippers and local bacon.
  • Lovely, caring owners, food of high quality. Bedroom small with minute shower room.

  • A superb welcome and a thoroughly enjoyable stay. Mike and Judy are delightful hosts and very well informed about the locality. The meals were splendid and the bedroom was very comfortable, and the bathroom seemed to be permenantly available for those who like me prefer a bath. We have stayed there twice before and are returning in the autumn - a definitely favourite place for us.

  • One of the friendliest places we have ever stayed in. The bedroom was excellent, and quite substantial for such a small establishment. The quality and variety of the food was outstanding and the service could not be faulted.
