'The friendly owners and their helpful staff make you quickly feel at home.' Praise this year for Lindsay Spalding and Don Birch's popular small hotel near the north Norfolk coast. The creeper-clad Georgian house, 'with Victorian character', was once the holiday home of Agatha Christie. 'A pot of tea and cake when you arrive is a welcome part of the greeting.' The restaurant, a small garden lounge and two bedrooms have been refurbished this year. There are three sizes of bedroom: small doubles ('cosy, with shower'); standard rooms, and more spacious garden and four-poster rooms (which have a slipper bath and a walk-in shower). In the restaurant, chef Steven Norgate serves a short menu using ingredients sourced from within ten miles wherever possible. Typical dishes: slow-cooked belly pork, apple purée; Lowestoft-landed cod on cannellini bean, mushroom and red pepper ragout. In summer, pre-dinner drinks are served in the garden. The 'faultless' breakfast has 'lots of fruit'. The owners' Airedale terriers meet guests after their evening walk. Visitors' dogs are welcomed in three bedrooms. (Joy and Ron Driver)

  • This small hotel in North Norfolk cannot be beaten. The staff, obviously totally happy working in this homely environment, make you feel so very welcome. The food is wonderful, the chocolate tart is 'Heaven on a Plate'. Dogs are made as welcome as their human companions. Lindsay and Don run this hotel to perfection.
