The Old Rectory

In the Yare valley on the outskirts of Norwich, this three-storey Grade II listed Georgian rectory is the family home of Chris and Sally Entwistle and their Birman cats, Rollo and Milli. 'A very comfortable family-run hotel', it returns from the Shortlist to a full entry thanks to a positive report by regular correspondents. 'The house is spacious and the cooking is of a high standard; we would readily return.' The bedrooms in the main house have Georgian proportions; some have the original fireplace. 'Our standard room was large with an excellent bathroom with bath and separate shower. We were given a choice of blankets or duvet.' Three rooms in a converted coach house (20 yards away) have sloping beams. In the panelled restaurant, which faces the south lawn, chef James Perry has a short menu of modern dishes, perhaps smooth parsnip and thyme soup; roasted marinated chicken breast, crushed new potatoes, Puy lentil and vegetable sauce. Breakfast has 'chef's own' toasted muesli; local bacon, sausages and ham, free-range eggs. In summer, it can be taken in a gazebo by the swimming pool. (Bryan and Mary Blaxall)
  • A very comfortable family-run hotel near the river, in attractive grounds. The house is spacious. Our bedroom was large, with luxurious bathroom, choice of blankets or duvet. Cooking of a high standard. Breakfast has wide and freshly cooked choice.
