Currarevagh House

César award in 1992

In beautiful parkland and woodland on the shores of Lough Corrib, this early Victorian manor house is run in personal style by the Hodgson family. Henry Hodgson is in charge of front-of-house, assisted by his mother, June; his wife, Lucy, is the chef. They, and their staff, are 'attentive', with 'an easy charm', and a 'perfect combination of friendliness and professionalism', say visitors. The bedrooms have views of the lough or of mountains to the north; they have fresh flowers, blankets and sheets; hot-water bottles at evening turn-down. Afternoon tea in the drawing room is a lavish affair (cakes, cucumber sandwiches, pancakes, etc). 'Interesting and adventurous' modern country house dishes at dinner might include air-cured lamb fillet; sea bass, sauce vierge, champ. Breakfast is an Edwardian buffet on the sideboard: honey-roast ham to carve, daily-baked soda bread, croissants and crustless toast; 'all the usual hot items replaced when they become cool'. Fishing is the major attraction: Currarevagh has its own boats and ghillies on Lough Corrib. (J and MB, and others)

  • As ever, an absolute delight. The cooking has advanced: dinner is now four courses. Quantities perfectly judged; what has improved is the sheer panache of the courses. My friends' dog was accommodated with no fuss

  • No-choice dinner menu and the bedroom door had no key.

  • My wife and I and two of our children throughly enjoyed our stay. The food is seriously good.

  • Our first stay here, and we agree with the Guide entry about the easy charm, the welcoming atmosphere, the beauty of the setting (especially for rooms such as the one we had, which have loch views) and the splendour of the breakfast buffet. The food is very good without being over-rich. Despite the rain we were able to relax and feel at home; the other guests were good company. There could be a more cheerful wall paint in the diningroom, a greater variety of tea treats from day to day and some written information on local walks especially from the hotel (although the Hodgsons were helpful when asked). No televisions in rooms, ideal as far as we were concerned; there is a television in the library.
