Old Bank

César award in 2011

On the High Street opposite All Souls College, Jeremy Mogford's modern conversion of three stone buildings (one a former bank) is 'the place to stay for laid-back luxury and a cheerful atmosphere'. Endorsed again this year ('a wonderful visit'), it is liked for the discreet atmosphere and 'friendly, helpful staff'. Huge contemporary canvases from Mr Mogford's extensive art collection hang in Quod, the 'lively' bar/restaurant which occupies the old banking hall. In the evening it is 'buzzing' with visitors of all ages at tightly packed tables: the 'simple things' on the bistro-style menu (steaks, salads and pizzas) are recommended. The quietest bedrooms are at the back: 'It was a treat to look at a church spire from our window seat; the decor is urbane rather than academic with modern paintings on the walls,' said a reporter. A superior room was 'peaceful, spacious; a smart marble bathroom'. The 'excellent' breakfast (7 to 11 am, charged extra) is a 'feast'; 'very good bread, proper marmalade'. Many of 'Oxford's most dazzling moments' are within 100 paces. The complimentary guided walking tour is recommended. (Claire Bowles, JR Shrimpton, John Leathes)
