The Elephant

'Quirkiness rather than quaintness' is the motto of this informal hotel in a busy village in the Thames valley. The first of Christoph Brooke's small but growing Hillbrooke group, it has 'the qualities of a good town hotel', said a Guide inspector. The bar and the restaurant are popular with locals. The Victorian building has been decorated throughout in colonial style: there are rugs on wooden floors, armchairs and comfortable sofas in the public areas. The bedrooms have eccentric touches: walls with collages of postcards and photographs. Charleston, facing the garden and a church at the back, had a 'massive Indian dark wooden bed, very comfortable with good sheets and blankets; a huge wooden chest at the base'. A miniature of elderflower liqueur by the bedside 'was a nice touch'. A reader in 2012 commented again on maintenance issues and poor lighting. Barry Liversidge, the chef, concentrates on locally sourced and seasonal dishes.  Bistro dishes can be taken in the bar. Breakfast 'was good'.
  • We enjoyed their Saturday Wine & Dine offer. We had an excellently furnished room facing the attractive garden, kept in immaculate order. All the staff were friendly and helpful, and the dinner – and choice of wines -- was excellent. Only caveat: the rather dreary appearance of the front dining room, in contrast to the other public areas.
