Neuadd Lwyd

César award in 2010

Standing amid fields and farmland, this 'lovely' grey-stoned Victorian rectory is run as a guest house by owners Susannah and Peter Woods. 'It was lovely to meet them again,' said a returning visitor. 'The standard of everything is first class.' The handsome bedrooms have views of the gardens, the Anglesey countryside and Snowdonia beyond. Owain has a king-size antique French bed and a pair of duck-egg-blue armchairs. Siasper is a compact twin-bed room lit by the morning sun. Pre-dinner canapés are served in the drawing room or, in summer months, on the terrace. 'You cannot fault Susannah's set menu of fantastic cooking.' A graduate of Ballymaloe cookery school in Ireland, she uses local produce for her daily-changing four-course dinners; typical dishes are Snowdonia wild mushroom and Madeira risotto; fillet of wild Menai sea bass, tarragon beurre blanc. At breakfast, there are home-made breads, preserves and granola; Llandudno oak-smoked salmon; locally cured bacon. A table by the French windows has unbeatable views of the mountains; on balmy evenings, guests are encouraged to dine alfresco. (Gordon Franklin)
