Neuadd Lwyd

César award in 2010

'Everything is first class' at this 'lovely' grey-stoned Victorian rectory, run by owners Susannah and Peter Woods as a rural guest house. There are large sofas and an open fire in the sitting room, and views of the Anglesey countryside and Snowdonia beyond. Individually styled, the pretty bedrooms have upholstered armchairs, wool blankets, fresh flowers; one, Edmwnd, has a claw-footed slipper bath painted aubergine. Books, magazines and DVDs are available to borrow. In the dining room looking towards the peaks of Snowdonia, 'you cannot fault Susannah's fantastic cooking'. Ballymaloe-trained, she supports the Anglesey food producers' network and favours organic ingredients; her daily-changing, no-choice menu might include potted hot smoked salmon, capers; slow-roasted Anglesey duck, melted leeks, Aga-roasted potatoes. (Vegetarians are catered for by arrangement.) On balmy evenings, guests are encouraged to dine alfresco. There are home-made preserves, home-baked bread and local honey at breakfast; Susannah Woods's noted Welsh rarebit, made with Bragdy Orme beer, is served with a tomato and chilli jam. (GF)
