Once a coaching stop for the York to Whitby stagecoach, this old inn is in the centre of a pretty market town. It has been owned by the Buchanan family for more than a quarter of a century. Victor and Marion Buchanan are in charge; Lisa Jones (née Fraser) is the manager. The mainly local staff are 'always friendly, helpful'. The residents' lounge has an open fire, complimentary tea and coffee, an honesty bar, newspapers and magazines. In the dining room, with its terracotta walls, flagstone floor and country kitchen oak furnishings, chef Darren Clemmit describes his cooking style as 'simple goodness from Yorkshire'. His menus might include Whitby fishcakes, herbed shrimp salad; slow-cooked belly pork, braised red cabbage, mustard mash. Bread, ice cream and chutneys are home produced. 'Vintage' bedrooms in the main building, recently renovated, have a traditional style; rooms in converted stables in a courtyard are more contemporary. Breakfast has cereals, fruit, yogurts, porridge with golden syrup, free-range 'boiled eggs with soldiers', and a full Yorkshire. The family has opened a deli/café/gift shop next door to the inn.
