The White Swan Inn

The hub of community life on the main street of a 'nice old market town', this 16th-century former coaching inn is managed by Catherine Feather for Victor and Marion Buchanan, the owners for 28 years. They guarantee that the 'sound of piped music won't intrude on your drink' in the small wood-panelled bar (or indeed the rest of the building). Hotel guests can sit in the Bothy, a converted barn which has a wood-burning stove, sofas, complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits, newspapers and magazines and a television. The bedrooms on the first and second floors of the main building are traditionally styled; rooms in the Hideaway, converted stables across an open courtyard, are more contemporary; Superior rooms have a separate sitting area; one has a TV you can watch from the bath. The information pack is 'a masterpiece of amusing comments'. In the dining room, the long-serving chef, Darren Clemmit, serves 'honest food'; perhaps roast confit of duck leg, orange and apricot chutney; Whitby fish and chips, posh peas and tartare sauce. Breakfast has 'very good marmalade', cereals, fruit, and cooked options. More reports, please.
  • It was all that we expected. The ‘hidden’ room that we chose provided accommodation of a very good standard with the benefit of car parking very near our door. We enjoyed our dinner; belly pork and roast lamb rump being h highlights of a menu that did not change much from day to day but offered ample choice. Breakfasts good too. In terms of efficiency and friendliness, we considered the service to be outstanding.
