The 'outstanding food' and 'welcoming staff' at Edward and Janet Boynton's 300-year-old coaching inn are praised again by visitors in 2011. It stands on the main street of a pretty village. 'The range of dishes, presentation and service is exceptional.' Louie Miller's menus can be taken in the tap room, the lounge bar or the dining room ('a huge bookcase crammed with books, large mirrors, a lovely old fireplace'). 'We enjoyed white onion soup to die for; a really tasty seafood pancake; perfectly cooked sprouting broccoli. Meticulous service by a staff who work together as a team.' The wine list 'will please wine buffs as it is run by a connoisseur'. A regular visitor warns that the bedrooms are less impressive: 'Simple, not luxurious but perfectly adequate.' A suite, in an adjacent building, has a 'comfy' bed, a sitting area through an archway. An 'excellent' breakfast has a 'large buffet selection, proper butter, fruit'; 'splendid haddock and poached egg'. The Domesday village is 'well placed for virtually all the Yorkshire racecourses'. • Stayed with our dog in Room 15, plain but comfortable; spotless en suite bathroom. View over large car park and fields beyond. Public rooms, full of character, came to life in evening, reminding us of a French restaurant-with-rooms, where food and wine are the most important ingredients. Enjoyable meal, comprehensive wine list, competent service, owners much in evidence. Breakfast buffet included fresh fruit salad, abundant coffee, no packets of butter or conserves.

  • Really a restaurant-with-rooms (our ground-floor room was small but perfectly adequate). Fantastic food with a wide choice of dishes. Haddock at breakfast to die for.

    Sir John B Hall, 10/10/2011

  • High standards maintained. Everyething an English inn should be. The welcome is always very friendly, and the staff offer excellent service. The food is excellent. We stayed in the suite. A peaceful night. Lovely breakfasts.

    Ian Malone, 04/09/2011

  • Efficiently run. Friendly and informative staff. Excellent choice on menu, good portion size. Local and 'when available' produce. Separate restaurant for more formal occasions. A great find for wine buffs: a connoisseur runs proceedings. Variety of beers. Rooms comfortable in adjacent building.

    Jo and Paul Pennington, 01/03/2010
