Hotel Portmeirion

César award in 1990

'Staying in Portmeirion is like living in a giant theatre set with hidden delights.' In woodlands on a Snowdonia peninsula, this 'quirky' resort has subtropical gardens, a beach, a stone boat, a shell grotto, a bell tower, a dog cemetery and a pan-tiled temple housing a golden statue of Buddha. 'Children particularly adore the fairy-tale aspect of the village.' Created in 1926 by the architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis - who famously said, 'I would rather be vulgar than boring' - the village now welcomes 250,000 visitors a year (many just for the day). Overnight guests stay in the main hotel; the Victorian castellated mansion, Castell Deudraeth, or rooms, suites and curious, colourful cottages around the estate. Two new family suites were being created as the Guide went to press. Around the village, guests eat in a brasserie, an Italian-style trattoria or a self-service restaurant; in the hotel's main dining room overlooking the estuary, Mark Threadgill's modern menu might include sautéed langoustine tails, smoked apple purée; wild sea bass, crab tortellini, pak choi. 'Breakfast, cooked to order, was very good.' (AT, and others)
  • The setting of the hotel is fabulous, and it is very quirky in design and architecture. The welcome was professional, and we were given a room overlooking the estuary with beautiful views. Overall the staff were very friendly and helpful - the only problem came at checkout with only one receptionist working. The dinner in general was good. Breakfast was very good.
