The Pear Tree at Purton

On the outskirts of a village between the Cotswolds and the Marlborough Downs, this extended former vicarage is run as a small hotel (Pride of Britain) by Francis and Anne Young. 'They managed our golden wedding celebration impeccably,' says a visitor this year. 'The staff were attentive and the food was excellent.' The Youngs supervised the conversion of the 16th-century sandstone building, later adding more bedrooms in an extension. The original building has a panelled library with a stone fireplace and a door opening onto the garden. In the formal dining room, spread over two conservatories, the chef, Alan Postill, serves modern English dishes, perhaps tian of crab with avocado and sweet potato; loin of lamb, Puy lentil ragout, walnut juice. The house stands in mature gardens, with wetlands, a wild-flower meadow, and a vineyard with 600 vines which produce a cuvée available in the restaurant. Bedrooms, each named after a character associated with the village, have fresh fruit and home-made shortbread. The award-winning breakfast has a 'good full English', honey from the Youngs' hives and jams made in the village. (Michael Baker)

  • Like one of your previous contributors, we took over the hotel for our golden wedding celebration. Francis and Anne managed the event impeccably, the staff were attentive and the food excellent. Although they were catering for 30 guests at one sitting, the kitchen served fresh food (from a limited choice menu) with speed and efficiency.
