Rathmullan House

'It is difficult to think of any hotel in Ireland which is more comfortable than Rathmullan House.' Praise from a visitor returning this year to the Wheeler family's Georgian mansion above a beach on Lough Swilly (a sea inlet). Mark and Mary Wheeler are the second generation of the family to run the hotel. The house is elegantly decorated throughout, with chandeliers, ornate plasterwork and comfortable sofas in the public areas. Bedrooms in the main house are traditional in style, some with four-poster. Rooms in the extension are more airy and have a contemporary feel; ground-floor rooms have doors that lead to an outside sitting area and the well-kept gardens. Pre-dinner drinks are served in the drawing rooms: there are two menus to choose from in the Weeping Elm restaurant, which has views over the lough; simpler fare is served in Batt's Bar and the Cellar Bar. The chef, Kelan McMichael, an advocate of the Slow Food movement, serves locally sourced meat and fish, and vegetables from the hotel's kitchen garden. (EC)

  • We loved this hotel. Super location, Excellent room (superior). Helpful staff. Excellent breakfasts. We enjoyed the dinners, but the same unimaginative green vegetables were served every night (as an extra). But an otherwise wonderful hotel.
