The Rose and Crown

César award in 2003

Beside a Saxon church opposite the green of a Teesdale village (where the stocks still stand), this 18th-century coaching inn is popular with Guide readers. 'We have been staying for 12 years and it has been consistently great in all that time,' say visitors this year. 'It may be expensive, but the young manager and the staff are perfect; we cannot fault the accommodation or the food.' The restaurant serves modern dishes with a regional influence, eg, loin of venison, potato rösti, wild mushroom jus. A brasserie menu is available in the bar, which has oak beams, old farming implements, log fires. The 'warm and comfortable' bedrooms in the main house are furnished with antiques; two have a private sitting room. The style is contemporary in five rooms in a rear courtyard, which are popular with dog owners and walkers because of the direct access to the car park. There is good walking, mountain biking, shooting and fishing in the area. (David Ribble, and others)
  • A lovely hotel with excellent staff. The building, most attractive both inside and out, is now owned by the Robinson family. Our welcome was friendly and helpful. Our room on the first floor was a good size, traditional and comfortable. Housekeeping was good. Lighting quite good, as bright spots in the ceiling made up for rather dim bedside lamps. They have a really good and interesting information book. Pity about the captive coathangers. The downstairs area is divided between the main restaurant with a nearby lounge, and the traditional bar with a bistro area at one end. The lounge has comfy sofas and chairs with plenty of magazines, cookery and travel books, The restaurant serves a good-value four-course menu for £35, which we very much enjoyed. A very good wine list. Breakfast was good.
