The Peacock at Rowsley  (Shortlist*)

'Generally a very enjoyable and comfortable stay.' This charming old inn by a bridge is owned by Lord Edward Manners of Haddon Hall and was once the dower house. It is managed by Ian and Jenni MacKenzie. 'The level of service and attention from the staff was excellent.' There are mullioned windows, leaded lights, log fires in stone fireplaces; soft furnishings in the 'cosy' bar have been updated in apple green and purple velvets. The quietest bedrooms overlook the gardens that run down to the River Derwent; those that face the busy road have double glazing. Dan Smith cooks ambitious modern dishes. Breakfasts are 'superb'. No background music. Lounge, bar, dining room (live classical guitar on Fri). Civil wedding licence. Conference rooms. 1/2-acre garden on river (fishing Apr--Oct). 16 bedrooms. B&B (continental) £77.50--£129 per person; D,B&B £107.50--£159. Cooked breakfast £7.25
  • The levels of service and attention from the staff were excellent. Cleanliness and housekeeping were as one would expect at this price point. The food at both dinner and breakfast was good, although maybe not exceptional at the price. Generally a very enjoyable and comfortable stay. Drawbacks: the car park is a little way from the hotel, and it is inescapable the the hotel is right next to the busy A6, although our room at the side of the hotel towards the back was quiet. The bathroom was very small, although immaculate, with only a fairly ordinary shower over the bath.
