Stone House

Down a long, meandering driveway, this country hotel stands in 'rambling', extensive grassland in a tranquil East Sussex village. A Tudor manor house with Georgian additions, it has been in Jane and Peter Dunn's family for more than five centuries. A visitor from the US in 2012 enjoyed the hospitality of the house. Another comment: 'Peter Dunn is an attentive host who offers a warm welcome.' The interior is filled with family antiques and vintage fabrics; the spacious public rooms have log fires ('even in August'). 'Every bedroom is comfortable and different', whether in the grand Georgian wing or the Tudor section, where smaller rooms have beams and a sloping ceiling. In the 'beautifully kept gardens', a walled potager and summer orchard provide vegetables, herbs and fruit for the kitchen: 'The great variety of fresh, healthy vegetables made you look forward to dinner.' Mrs Dunn's 'superb meals' might include nettle tip and wild garlic soup, rosemary croutons; roast South Down partridge, wild rice, parsnip slivers. A picnic can be provided for Glyndebourne, 20 minutes' drive away. (Keith Irvine, JW)
  • I cannot fault it. All was perfection. Beautiful antique furniture, family portraits, lovely fabrics, carpet in the bathroom (not tiles). Baggage carried. Every bedroom delightful. Helpful staff. Mr Dunn, aged 91, a hospitable host. Mrs Dunn still cooks. Excellent food, if expensive.

  • We enjoyed three very good and well served meals. Despite mostly terrible weather we felt the hospitality of this house. We were in the "suite" in the older part of the building and it was a bit drafty but still warm. The bathroom has one small tub with no shower.

  • Very enjoyable. Gardens and grounds beautifully kept. Great of vegetables, so fresh. Excellent food. Mrs Dunn couldn't have been more helpful.

  • Stone House has become an annual autumn weekend treat. Every room is comfotable and different - we had the suite this year, and loved the extra space. Jane Dunn's food is superb. Peter Dunn is an attentive host who offers a warm welcome and excellent advice on wine.
