The Rose and Crown

César award in 2003

'What makes this hotel so special is the staff, who are without exception friendly and attentive.' Praise comes for Alison and Christopher Davy's 18th-century coaching inn. Matt Scott has been promoted to manager. 'Our room was lovely and the food and atmosphere were good,' says another guest. Beside a Saxon church, opposite the green of a Teesdale village, the inn has lots of polished panelling, oak beams, gleaming brass and copper; log fires, old farming implements, fresh flowers. There are seven bedrooms in the main house, some with antique furniture; two have a private sitting room. Five, in the rear courtyard, have a more modern style. With direct access to the car park, these are popular with walkers and dog owners. In the attractive, oak-panelled restaurant (redecorated this year) Mr Davy and Andrew Lee cook modern dishes with a regional influence, perhaps pan-fried pink Lunesdale duckling, roast thyme potatoes, beetroot fondant. A brasserie menu is available in the bar. Breakfast has home-made bread, jams and marmalade. (Peter Jones, Lyn Wildgoose)

  • We have been staying here once or twice a year for about 12 years. It has been consistantly great in all that time. We cannot fault the accomodation, service or Food. On we didn't see the owners but the young manager and staff were perfect.
