La Sablonnerie - Sark

On a tiny, car-free island, this converted 16th-century farmhouse is run in very personal style by the owner, Elizabeth Perrée. She is 'on friendly terms with her guests', said recent guests. Visitors are met at the pier by a horse-drawn carriage. The small hotel, consisting of the main building and a string of cottages, is in the quiet southern corner of the island. Its white walls are surrounded by bushes and flowers; inside are low ceilings and oak beams, a log fire in the bar. The bedrooms vary greatly in size and style. In the pretty dining room (beams, candles, elegant china; no background music), chef Colin Day's 'excellent' daily-changing menu might include queen scallops, baby calamari, confit of Jersey Royals; steamed turbot, courgette flower fritter, Noilly Prat sauce. Beef, fruit and vegetables come from the home farm. Breakfast has 'perfect' scrambled eggs'; cereals and stewed fruit. Best to visit in summer, to enjoy the 'glories of the lovely gardens', where meals can be taken alfresco. (JB, and others)

  • A memory that lives forever! The hydrangeas, the views, lovely Elizabeth, Elizabeth's father with his tales of vthe resistance. The whimsical plaque on the road from town to the effect that it had been built by the Royal Engineers with the co-operation of the German prisioners after WWII.
