'A great place to stop on the way to or from Scotland', this spacious architect-designed building near Carlisle is run by owners John and Liz McGrillis as an upmarket guest house. 'They are friendly and helpful, working hard to assist guests,' writes a visitor. In woodland, with a duck pond and weeping willows, the house is 'very modern; a wonderful galleried dining room has masses of windows allowing you to look at the stars through a powerful telescope'. 'They have taken care with every detail,' says a 2012 guest. Bedrooms are named after trees (Willow, Oak, Ash, etc), and vary in price and size. 'Our room was very nice indeed, newly decorated and furnished to a high standard, with comfortable chairs and plenty of space. The bathroom was bright and well appointed.' Mrs McGrillis cooks a fixed menu in the evenings, which might include stuffed red peppers; salmon marinated in lime juice and grilled. Phone ahead to discuss preferences. Whenever we are in the general area of Carlisle, we stay at this wonderful Bed & Breakfast. There is always a great welcome from John and/or Liz McGrillis. The room(s) are superbly furnished and spacious, with a contemporary finish. The breakfast (which is cooked to order) is something to behold.

A great place to stop on the way south from Scotland. A very modern house with a wonderful galleried dining room. Our very nice room was newly decorated, and furnished to a high standard. The owners are friendly and helpful. An excellent breakfast.
