'Great hosts helped by a delightful staff', Mike and Carole Hailston run their Victorian gentleman's house as a small traditional hotel. It stands in the middle of a quiet public park 'with wonderful sea views'. A visitor in 2012 found it 'delightful and comfortable, full of wonderful decorative details'. In the dining room (damask wall covering, a chandelier with matching wall lights), Mr Hailston's daily-changing short menu might include tomato and basil soup; sea bass fillet in a herb crust, Pernod and thyme jus. He tells us that following comments in the Guide, background music is no longer played. The green-walled lounge has heavy fabrics, books and ornaments; a Victorian-style covered patio has basket chairs, magazines to read. Each bedroom is named after an English tree. Maple, the largest, has a triangular window seat and alcove with a sofa and easy chair; Beech has a four-poster and dual-aspect windows; Cedar, with bedside cabinets in Shaker style, is the smallest. Breakfast has 'lovely sausages'; local butter is now served (not pre-packed containers). (Diana Chrzaszcz, and others)
