Toravaig House

Renovated from the foundations to the roof by the owners, Anne Gracie and Kenneth Gunn, this handsome white-painted hotel has fine views across to Knoydart. 'It is smartly and stylishly furnished,' says a visitor in 2013. 'The lovely little drawing room has comfy sofas, an open fire, a baby grand piano.' Richard Massey has joined as the chef: 'His cooking is very good indeed; a procession of small portions of inventive dishes. Little carrot soufflés and deep-fried haggis balls were excellent tasters; Cullen skink velouté had lovely flavours; our scallops were ultra-fresh and perfectly cooked. The young woman who acted as manager and head waitress coped brilliantly with a power cut. We didn't like the soft background music which played all day.' An earlier visitor commented on the 'high standards of housekeeping'. A small side room had a 'pleasant hillside view; the bathroom was so small that it was impossible to dry yourself'. Breakfast, served until 10 am ('much appreciated'), has the 'best porridge'; 'delicious toast'; an extensive choice of cooked dishes. Nearby, Duisdale House (see Shortlist) is under the same ownership. (SM, and others)
  • A restful stay in a pleasant house with large garden, much of which needed attention. Decking for good weather and fine views across Skye. The beds were comfortable; good linen and reading lights. Our small side room had a pleasant hillside view The bathroom, was modern and clean but so small it was impossible to dry yourself. The dining room service was excellent both at dinner and breakfast, but we thought the dinner over-priced. Small portions. Housekeeping standards are high throughout, and the public rooms are decorated to a high standard and very comfortable. Breakfast was most enjoyable and relaxing, and service until 10am much appreciated

  • My wife and I found the food exceptional and the service first class, beyond the call of duty.
