The Rose & Crown

'In most respects a delight,' says a visitor this year to Jeannette and Anthony Goodrich's 14th-century inn opposite the cricket pitch in a village on the Wash. Although many original features remain - low ceilings, old beams, winding passages, log fires - the bedrooms, in the original part of the building and an extension, have been given a contemporary make-over using bold candy colours. They are well equipped with tea- and coffee-making equipment, books, and a useful guide to the area written by the Goodriches. There is a separate guest lounge, or visitors can sit in one of the three dining areas, which have been refurbished this year. The cellar bar now has a dado rail with a subtle taupe colour; the garden room, popular with families, has new roman blinds and giant photographs of Norfolk beaches and boats. Jamie Clark has been promoted to head chef: he uses local suppliers for his traditional food with a modern twist and his dishes might include Brancaster mussels in marinière sauce; sweet chilli beef stir fry, udon noodles. The Goodriches also own The Bank House, King's Lynn (see entry).
  • A delight in most respects. Lunch was well prepared and served. My room was smallish, plain and comfortable. No bar snacks in the evening.
