The Rose and Crown

Built in the 14th century to accommodate craftsmen working on the village church, this old inn is owned by Jeannette and Anthony Goodrich; Kim Tinkler is the manager. The 'pleasant staff, good food and great value' are praised again this year by readers. The inn has winding passages, ancient beams, uneven floors, hidden corners, log fires. Often busy with locals, it has a 'warm, relaxed atmosphere'. The bedrooms, in the older part of the building, and in an extension, have been given a contemporary look with seaside colours; they have tea- and coffee-making facilities and an informative guide to the area written by the Goodriches. Guests have their own lounge, or they can sit in one of the three bars. There is free Wi-Fi throughout. In the three dining areas, new chef Jamie Clarke uses local suppliers for his pub classics (eg, Holkham bangers and mash). In the garden, an ageing children's play fort has been replaced by a new hand-crafted galleon. The Goodriches also own The Bank House, King's Lynn (see entry).   • A delight in most respects. Lunch was well prepared and served. My room was smallish, plain and comfortable. No bar snacks in the evening.
