Soar Mill Cove Hotel - Devon

'An idyllic place', Keith Makepeace's single-storey hotel stands in large grounds surrounded by National Trust land above an isolated sandy cove. 'The owners and staff are unfailingly helpful and pleasant,' says a visitor this year. 'Standards are as high as ever with immaculate housekeeping and regularly refurbished rooms,' says the hotel's greatest fan. All bedrooms have French doors opening on to a private patio. 'Even in a howling gale our room was warm and cosy.' A reader with mobility problems thought the disabled parking and side door entrance were 'ideal'. In the formal Serendipity restaurant, chef Ian MacDonald's cooking is praised: 'As good as ever; the lamb from a local smallholding was incomparable, and fish, especially sole and sea bass, was unrecognisable as the rather tired pieces we get at home.' Families are welcomed: a coffee bar, Castaways, is popular with younger guests; there are tennis courts, a games room, table tennis, two small spring-fed swimming pools (one indoors). Breakfast has a 'fine array of fruit, cereals, croissants; a copious full cooked'. 'Glorious' coastal walks from the grounds. (Helen Anthony, Margaret H Box)
  • As regular visitors we are never disappointed. The welcome is warm, the food is good and the hotel is confortable. The outdoor pool, rarely used, has been replaced by a grassy bank and there are plans to improve the indoor poo.l
