Soar Mill Cove Hotel

In 'a stunning location, with wonderful views', Keith Makepeace's family-friendly hotel stands in extensive grounds above a sandy cove in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It has many fans who admire the 'personal attention to detail by staff' and 'the immaculate housekeeping'. Popular with older guests in off-season, it is busy with families in the school holidays. 'We never impose rules, but we try to offer a range of options,' says the hotel. There is much for young people to do: small swimming pools, indoor and outdoor play areas, activity packs, rock pooling on the beach. There are high teas and family dinner times; Castaways coffee bar is for 'muddy paws and boots and younger guests'. In the formal Serendipity restaurant, chef Ian MacDonald's dinner menus might include a salad of Salcombe scallops with spicy chorizo; grilled fillet of West Country beef, celeriac purée and roasted shallots. 'A continual delight; the fish is always excellent,' says a visitor in 2012. All bedrooms have French doors opening on to a private patio. Breakfast includes fruit, cereals, croissants and a variety of cooked dishes. Walks down to Soar Mill Cove are 'wonderful'. (Chris Smith, Margaret H Box)
  • Very friendly. Excellent service from all the staff. Good quality and varied dinner menu. A couple of tiny niggles: the plug didn't fit the basin properly, so the water ran out; and I had to ask for the replacement of three light bulbs. Our room was large and warm. It was a pity that we weren't able to make use of our private patio because of the weather. There is no longer an outdoor pool, but my swim each morning in the indoor pool was a highlight of our visit.

  • As regular visitors we are never disappointed. The welcome is warm, the food is good and the hotel is confortable. The outdoor pool, rarely used, has been replaced by a grassy bank and there are plans to improve the indoor poo.l
